It’s been almost 11 years since the great Walter Payton passed away, but he’s still making an impact on the game—and on kids. “He was happier about his accomplishments off the field than his play on the field,” Payton’s son, Jarrett, said. “He was always about giving back to kids, and telling them that it’s all about having an opportunity to achieve.” It’s Payton’s total legacy that inspired the Walter Payton Achievement Award, given annually to two players competing in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge.
